David Donovan is the pen name of Terry T. Turner, Ph.D., former Professor of Urology and of Cell Biology, now Professor Emeritus, at the University of Virginia. Dr. Turner is an expert in the basic science of andrology (male reproductive biology and medicine) and enjoys an international reputation in that field. For writings outside of science he has adopted the pen name of David Donovan under which he wrote his first two books, Once a Warrior King and Murphy Station.
David grew up in southern Georgia and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia in 1967. After that he was off to the U. S. Army and Vietnam from which he returned in 1970. Going back to graduate school at the University, he completed his Ph. D. in 1974 and took a period of post-doctoral training at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, TX in 1975. In 1976, he received appointment to the faculty of the University of Virginia becoming a full Professor in 1991 and Professor Emeritus in 2008. His first book, Once a Warrior King, was about his experiences in Vietnam and was well received. The demands of David's scientific profession restricted his time for further writing outside the bounds of science, but Murphy Station has now been published and he is at work on other books (see "What's next?" ).

David is married to wife, Susan, with whom he has two children, Heather and Patrick. Excellent people all! He enjoys travel -well, the being there, not the getting there- and is glad for chances he has had to explore new places and new cultures. He enjoys outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and or scuba diving and indoor activities like exploring library stacks or watching classic movies. Oh, and an occasional party doesn't hurt, either!
